2010雅思考试必读:总结09年口语五大失分点

Reason 1: Lack of self-esteem(缺乏自尊)

î        Contrary to popular opinion that English background is the most essential in having an excellent mark in IELTS speaking exam, lack of self-esteem is actually the major cause of a low mark in the test. For example, ,most candidates will feel extremely anxious or feel serious nervousness during the exam and while answering the examiners question because of lack of self-esteem. There are times that students are not confident enough about their answers or with their English ability so they will start to shake and become nervous. At times, it is because they are not ready or did not prepare well enough for the test, this can also lower their self-confidence and make them anxious.

î        Thus, it can affect their performance and their thinking during the test. And the worst thing is student’s brain becomes totally blank and will not know how to answer or their facial expression becomes so stiff because of extreme nervousness. These things can affect the result of their band scores seriously. Good self-esteem should be properly trained during IELTS training in the class and students should do adequate preparation before attending the actual exam to be able to conquer their lack of self-esteem and obtain an ideal band score.

î        Furthermore, there are chances that because of lack of self-esteem students become pointless of what they say, they would not know where to start to answer and how to start answering. Actually, the examiners can feel this and can cause a minor deduction from the band score. A good communicator should be sure and tough with what they are saying to convince the examiner that what they are saying is actually true. Confidence is the most important thing a student should have before thinking of taking the exam.

Reason 2: Lack of practice(缺少实践)

î        There is a saying that “Practice makes perfect” and this is totally true when you want to achieve an excellent band score in a test like IELTS. Students fail basically because they did not do enough practice and exercise. Most students would want educators to teach them skills and techniques but they do not apply it by doing necessary exercises. For instance, in speaking part of IELTS, students would want as many questions and answers from their teacher but they do not spend time in thinking about them and they do not open their mouth to practice the answers

î        Remember to put into practice everything students have learned inside the class and find out which part they cannot do well and ask for their teachers help. The more practice students have done the better result he/she will have in the exam.

Reason 3: Lack of vocabulary(词汇量不足)

î        There is no doubt that the failure of a student in the IELTS exam is because of inadequate amount of English words. It is definitely very difficult to speak, write, read and listen without a right amount of words. Students fail simply because they do not understand what they are reading or listening and cannot understand what are the questions in writing and speaking part.

î        Hence, they will also have a hard time in spelling their answers or in expressing what they want to say. Students who have wide vocabulary receive more attention and respect from the examiners because vocabulary indicates a student’s English level and ability. Language and the way we use words conveys intelligence and experience. A student who can use converse well using good words means they have a deep and excellent educational background. Poor vocabulary means lack of intelligence so it is important to brush up on your vocabulary to have a good impression from the examiner.

î        However, there are instances that students have a good amount of vocabularies but the problem is they are not used to use them or does not have the ability to use them. Sometimes, they use it in a wrong way. It is not necessary to speak in ostentatious language that nobody can understand you, but having a strong command of English vocabulary and using it in an artful manner is a skill that students should seek before going to the test.

Reason 4: Lack of basic grammar knowledge(没有语法常识)

î        Grammar is important no matter what other people say. It is important both in the IELTS test and learning a language. Unlike what some unprofessional teachers say, it necessary to learn it well. It is like body structure that should be learned in order to create a beautiful sentence and express well what you want to say. Grammar teaches us how to build sentences, about the types of words that we use and when we should use them. And it also tells us what type of word we are using in any particular sentence.

î        There are lots of different aspects to English grammar, and each is as important as the last. It is good grammar that will allow you to be a better communicator, listener, thinker, reader and writer. Hence, students should also be careful about the logic of what they say. Grammar without logic and organisation means you cannot clearly put across your message. The more grammar rules you understand, the clearer your communication and writing will be. This makes it easier for you to be heard and to tell your story and understood by the examiner. Having a knowledgeable understanding of grammar will let you have a potentially rewarding score in IELTS test.

Reason 5: Lack of fluency(流利程度不够)

î        Most students think that fluency is only important in speaking and writing part of IELTS exam. Less of them know that fluency is also necessary in reading. More fluent readers focus their attention on making connections among the ideas and their background knowledge. Therefore they can focus on comprehension and find the answers immediately.

î        However, less fluent readers concentrate their attention primarily in decoding and accessing the meaning of individual words. So, they have little attention left for comprehending the text and will not find the right answers. Being fluent in all parts of the test is necessary when you want to achieve an excellent mark in the IELTS test.
