IELTS Topic: Cleaning Up Pollution
Cole's Suggestion:

One of the controversial issues today relates to (the question about whether companies and tour operators or the government should pay the bills for cleaning up pollution.)  In this essay, I am going to examine this question from both points of view.

On one side of the argument, there are people who argue that the benefits of (the private parties being held responsible for paying the expenses) considerably outweigh its disadvantages.  The main reason for believing this is that (the government can make companies and tour operators involved feel the social burden of their business activities.)  It is also possible to say that (the government can help reduce air and water pollution by taxing the use of fossil fuels.)  One good illustration of this is (that the government can use the increased incomes to solve environmental problems.)

On the other hand, it is also possible to make the opposing case.  It is often argued that in fact (raising taxes will negatively affect consumers, particularly the poor.)  People often have this opinion because (this measure will cause prices of consumer goods and services to rise accordingly.)  One good illustration of this is that (it will become more expensive to buy things and to travel.)  A particular good example here is that (most people cannot afford to buy plane tickets.)

As we have seen, there are no easy answers to this question.  On balance, however, I tend to believe that (companies and tour operators should pay the bills for cleaning up pollution。

IELTS Topic: the food travel debate

第二题
2>Today foods travel thousands of miles from farms to consumers.  Why? Is it a positive or negative trend?

Cole's Suggestion:

One of the controversial issues today relates to the question whether it is a positive or negative trend that foods travel thousands of miles from farms to consumers.  In this essay, I am going to examine this question from both points of view.

On one side of the argument, there are people who argue that the benefits of food transportation considerably outweigh its disadvantages.  The main reason for believing this is that this trade practice is positive for sellers and consumers alike.  It is also possible to say that many farm products from far away can be sold at affordable prices at the local marketplaces.  One good illustration is that this is beneficial because as the population continues to grow, so does the demand for foods.

On the other hand, it is also possible to make the opposing case.  It is often argued that in fact the environmental impact of transportation is just too big to be ignored.  People often have this opinion because pollution from transportation is believed to generate greenhouse gases which cause the earth's climate to change.  One good illustration is that fuel burning has become so excessive that environmentalists are calling to reduce transportation activities.  A particular good example here is that the longer the distance food travels, the fuel consumption of the transportation vessels will also be greater, and therefore the more serious the global warming.

As we have seen, there are no easy questions to the question.  On balance, however, I tend to believe that buying local produce not only supports local farmers but also provides dinner tables with the freshest food varieties.

IELTS Topic: the advertising debate

第三题
3>Some people think that advertising is good for economy while others say it can cause people to desire something unnecessary or completely useless.  What is your opinion?

Cole's Suggestion:

One of the controversial issues today relates to the question whether advertising is a positive or negative development.  In this essay, I am going to examine this question from both points of view.

On one side of the argument, there are people who argue that the benefits of advertising considerably outweigh its disadvantages.  The main reason for believing this is that advertising serves market economy well, giving people a chance as consumers.  It is also possible to say that consumers are told about new products and services that improve their lives.  One good illustration is that economy is at its best when the advertising industry is booming.

On the other hand, it is also possible to make the opposing case.  It is often argued that in fact many consumers are convinced to spend money they do not have for things they really do not need.  People often have this opinion because advertisements make people desire things which are not necessary or even useless.  One good illustration is that this kind of impulsive buying behavior can easily turn need into greed.

As we have seen, there are no easy answers to the question.  On balance, however, I tend to believe that advertising is a positive development because when people are starving or freezing, there should be no advertising whatever to sell food or fuel.
